I was born in the former Soviet Union shortly before its fall. My family moved to the US while my father was in the US as a visiting fellow at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. I grew up in Nashville and went to Vanderbilt for undergrad where I met Tim, my comrade in arms for this, and many adventures (homebrewing blog may yet be forthcoming.) Tim and I both majored in Molecular Cell Biology at Vanderbilt. After graduation we took time off and lived with some other friends in Nashville while working in research labs at Vanderbilt. We will both be attending graduate school in the Fall of 2009, I at University of Oregon, and Tim at University of California Davis. As one can imagine, a two and a half month bicycling trip is not something you can just do anytime you want, so having this time before graduate school is a key motivating factor in going on this trip. This blog has remained dormant for a while, but I'm hoping for a new trip soon.
The beer gods seem to have smiled on us that weekend. We took the bus into Portland from Astoria to visit some friends without knowing our visit would coincide with the Oregon Brewer's Festival! Tim looks like he's already had a few, but I think this was the first taste of the afternoon. We stumbled around downtown after and checked out Powell's city of books. The next day Scott gave us a short driving tour before he had to go to work and Tim and I had to get on our bus. We hit up the Portland Rose garden. They have an annual rose competition and plant the winners in the garden. There are bushes here from the '20s! I don't know if they're the original plants, or just the same strain, but its still impressive. Not much to comment on, so enjoy!
The city of Portland pays for yearly public art installations, and this is one of them. Scott told us that the cyclist lobby in Portland is powerful enough to successfully lobby the city to install this bike tower. The city also has bike monuments all over the city to those who died on bicycles in car accidents on that spot. It serves as a reminder for drivers (and maybe cyclists) to be careful and look out for each other.
