Day One Pics

Like I mentioned Earlier Tim and I got dropped off on the Virginia coast and made our way down to the beach. We were both filled with a great degree of trepidation, as we didn't know what to expect from this trip, and the feeling of being left alone in this strange place was a lot to deal with. We took our time, took some pictures and strolled down to the water to dip our feet in. We didn't dip our tires, mainly because wheeling them through the sand seemed like a guaranteed flat tire, and dragging 100-150 lbs of bike and bags was way too much to ask for a symbolic gesture.

This is the Yorktown Victory Monument. I don't know why most victory monuments are phallic, but this one was erected to commemorate the British surrender after the colonists' thrust and French Naval blockade. The Brits surrendered to the French by the way, so next time anyone decides to go France bashing for having some foresight in predicting strategic blunders, remember, we owe them our freedom.
In case anyone is wondering what it looks like to be riding down the Trans America route it looks something like this. And this is what it looks like behind you. :)

Colonial Williamsburg, pretty cool, in a kitschy kind of way.

We pulled over for a little break, and saw this random parade of classic cars.
Look Ma, no hands! (I think my mother is having a heart attack right now...)

Even with a day full of riding, we managed to get a chance to stop and smell the flowers... (why do you build me up, buttercup...)
We made it into Glendale, a really country community in Virginia, 66 miles down the road. We stayed in this United Methodist Church, that was really nice enough to let us crash in their building expansion.

This was our room for the night, we just rolled out our sleeping bags on the floor. I awoke on 4/20/2009 under the watchful eye of Jesus and his disciples...
Check out Gerry Garcia in the lower left hand corner.

  1. I'm glad someone was watching over you, though I don't trust that Garcia character...

    Love you!
