The area we are in is under a tornado watch so Tim and I decided to stay at a motel to weather the storm. The wireless is pretty slow here, so uploading pics takes forever. I'll have to work on getting them to a smaller file size so please bear with me.
Yesterday's ride was excellent. It was definitely weird to just get dropped off on the Virginia coast with our bikes, our modest supplies, and our wits. Like any other ride before this, thinking about it was way worse than doing it. Once we got started we felt great. We ate lunch in Williamsburg and pushed on to a small town called Glendale. We met a married couple who hailed from Eugene, OR who were doing the same route, except they were taking the full Trans Am to Eugene. Seemed like a really cool idea to bike home from Virginia. They were riding a tandem, which looked intense, and it was their second day already, which made me feel pretty good about our pace.
This morning it was raining, and like yesterday, it was way more daunting to think about it, than actually do it. Once we started riding, everything was groovy. I have to invest in some shoe covers, and probably a better pair of rainpants. This is what all those rainy rides to work prepared me for, although its a considerably different experience to bike for 15 minutes to work as opposed to 2 hours to the closest town. We checked in around 3 pm, with plenty of time for some well deserved R&R. Aventinus Icebock from Scheinder & Weisse Braurei just upstream of the Danube from Regensburg, Germany was a great way to round off the day.
People so far have been really cool, and those that find out what our plans are can't get enough of the idea. I couldn't wait to respond to someones question of "So where ya'll going?" with "San Francisco."
Mileage for yesterday: 66, Mileage for today: 35 (t-storms kept us from going farther). Planned mileage for tomorrow: 80! Pushing on to Charlottesville for maybe a free place to stay.
Until next time,
-sf
